Simply standing in the middle of the court is almost always wrong. In today’s lesson, Brady demonstrates where to correctly position when at the baseline in singles.

Surely it takes longer for the ball to travel cross-court than down the line. It has to travel further cross court, giving you more time to get there. Staying central thus makes sense because you have less time to get to a shot down the line. The principle shown in the video only applies if the ball is traveling the same distance for both shots (i.e., bouncing short across court).

My coach is an ex-pro and when I tried to explain the idea behind this video to him, he disagreed. “Get back to the center,” he said.
