A lot of recreational players have heard the term “pronation”, but they don’t know exactly what it means. So in today’s short lesson, Brady illustrates what pronation is and on what shots you should be utilizing it in your own game.

I recently came down with tennis elbow and cannot serve overhand due to pain while pronating. Any recommendations for rehab.

I had an interesting chat with a British tennis pro online (The Tennis Mentor) a year or so about this. To sum up, I think folks who don’t grow up playing baseball or softball have a harder time understanding and utilizing pronation than those who do. Basically, you pronate every time you throw a baseball or a softball. However, unlike the USA, most kids in other parts of the world, with a few exceptions, grow up playing soccer (or football), so, they never learn how to throw a baseball. So, what I tell folks is to just imagine you are throwing a baseball when serving or hitting an overhead. Maybe that’s too old school for today? But. that’s what I was taught a long-g-g-g-g-g time ago when I first learned how to play tennis.
