Have you ever been told by a coach to “scratch your back” on your serve? This was a common saying years ago and is still unfortunately taught by some coaches. In today’s lesson, learn why “scratching your back” is the last thing you want to to do in your service motion.

This video was helpful in learning the serve loop, but I wanted to see much more than you offered. When you abruptly stopped, the lesson felt incomplete. I, like a lot of other players on the 3 level, have been struggling for longer than we care to remember to develop a sound fluid motion on the serve, but to little avail. Most of us can throw a ball perfectly well–often as far and as forcefully as anyone coaching us–but with a racquet in our hands it all fails.
