Another thing Fed was famous for, actually two things: 1) he focused on seeing the ball hit the strings through the back of the racquet and 2) his eyes jumped ahead of the ball to see it hit the strings. There’s a technical term for doing this, but I can’t remember what it is. A third thing he did was that he kept his eyes on the contact point until he finished his stroke, then he didn’t follow the ball to see if it was in or out. He said it’s your opponent’s or umpire’s job to call the lines on the other side of the court. What Fed did instead was find his opponent and watch what they were doing. He didn’t focus on the ball again until it was heading back to him. Watching his opponent enabled him to anticipate their next shot and get his feet moving in the right direction.
