    Left hand back is a great call out. On a forehand volley I somehow instinctively do this but need the mental reminder on the backhand side. Thanks!

    excellent!
    In doubles, I would go cross court most of the time; depending on the desired depth, my grip could be tight (for a deep volley) or feathered like fo a short angles volley.

    Why not step in with the left leg, leg closest to the racket? Squash players do this.
