Placement is paramount on the serve and how deep (or short) a serve lands can have a huge impact on the returner. In today’s lesson, Brady demonstrates several different serves and how he manages depth on each.

Excellent comments. Peter Cerra – I’m 70+, my serve used to be fairly fast (90+mph+) but now I have some back and arm/elbow issues so my mph has suffered. Speed is not essential to produce depth. Try for big targets in the box, move farther from the center line to produce more diagonal, so your serve goes off the court. Practice a consistent toss and try to hit ball at neutral – when it is neither going up/down – that will help consistent contact point and speed.

Spin sets me up for a winning approach. Kick is my go to second. I practice both several hours a week.

Interesting stuff…but at almost 80 my flat serve doesn’ travel very fast. I also don’t have much of a kick serve.

Now what? Isn’t depth the key for me? How do I get it consistenty?
